Your Saturday Stoic Review — June 12-18
The most common question we get at Daily Stoic is, 'how can I teach my children about stoicism?' That's why Ryan Holiday wrote The Boy Who Would Be King, which tells the story of how Marcus Aurelius became The Philosopher King, and The Girl Who Would Be Freeabout the life of Epictetus.
To celebrate the one year anniversary of The Girl Who Would Be Free, we are giving you 75% OFF of The Boy Who Would Be King! We have signed and personalized copies available, so don't miss out on this fantastic deal!
In a video on the Daily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday details the two-year writing process of his all-ages fable, The Girl Who Would be Free, which had its fair share of difficulties and obstacles, along with valuable and rewarding experiences:
"Most of what you do as a writer is solitary. What's different about this is that it's collaborative….You can't simply say 'Do it this way, that's how I want it'. It was a challenge in that sense but ultimately much more rewarding because by working with someone else, I was able to create something that wouldn't have been possible if it had been done solely with me."
"Sure, to be successful, we have to have some sense of what's happening in the world. But we shouldn't live and die by that. It's far better to be rooted in something deeper, something less urgent, more timeless. Keep a finger on the pulse of today, but remember most of the trends of today will tomorrow sound like the trends of yesterday. So let's continue to invest most of our time, attention, and trust in ideas, tools, and art that is outside of time."
On a recent episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with American entrepreneur, actor, producer, reality TV personality, and former professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek about how he applies Stoic principles to his life, and how managing his time and energy in more intentional ways has brought him happiness and fulfillment:
"When I really started looking at everything with this sort of holistic approach of 'I want to design a life that I live' and 'How does this play a part in my overall life?'… I began to grow bigger and bigger things with less and less effort that led me to a more harmonious, high quality existence."
"When things don't go the way we expect, we get into a muddle of anxiety, which leads to self-deterrence. Unable to game out the risks realistically, we fear taking any action at all. We can imagine a million things going wrong, and instead of figuring things out well enough to take some well-calculated risks, we become paralyzed."
