TOP NEWS Florida's near-total abortion ban Chris duMond/Getty Images Thursday, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a measure that would ban abortions after six weeks, before most people know they're pregnant. [Vox / Rachel M. Cohen] It won't take effect until after the conservative-controlled state Supreme Court rules on a challenge to Florida's existing 15-week ban. [Reuters] The new policy would further restrict abortion access throughout the South; previously, Florida served as a sanctuary for people from states with more restrictive laws after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. [Politico / Arek Sarkissian] The new law includes exceptions to save the pregnant person's life and allows victims of rape or incest to have abortions at up to 15 weeks if they provide documentation such as a police report. [Associated Press / Anthony Izaguirre] The new law would also require abortion pills to be dispensed in person, amid an abortion medication case likely headed to the Supreme Court. [Guardian / Angelique Chrisafis] The issue came to the court after Macron attempted to bypass Parliament to push through the legislation — a move that furthered opposition to the unpopular reforms and his presidency.
