One Brooklyn school has figured out a successful model for the children of asylum seekers as the city’s Education Department struggles to accommodate the new students from Latin America.

P.S. 24 in the Sunset Park has a bilingual program where students learn in English for half the day and in Spanish for the other half.

“We do have a dual language program and that has been a highlight for us in this process because the children have been able to be immersed — most of them — in their own native language,” the school’s principal, Maria Diaz, told POLITICO during a recent visit to the school.

With funding from the DOE’s central office, the school rehired its retired "English as a New Language" instructor and extended its arts offering to a lunchtime program where kids learn about different instruments and musical genres from Latin America and the Caribbean.

School officials have led walks around the surrounding community. They also hosted a coat drive in the PTA room where students could go in and select warm clothes and worked with other schools to find necessities for families.

“We really banded together as a community and when different community organizations heard that there was a need, they stepped in,” Diaz said.

The guidance counselor, Ada Galan, does individual and group sessions, checks in informally on students in the morning and sees them during lunch. She also holds "healing circles" where the youngsters, who’ve often made long perilous trips from their home countries, can share experiences.

One member of a youth group — 10-year-old Anabel Tavarez — said she and her classmates also help translate for the migrant students.

“It has been a great experience meeting them because I feel that it makes me so happy to see that there’s other students entering this wonderful school and getting to experience the things that we do,” Tavarez said. — Madina Touré

Clash Looms Between Council and Mayor Adams as Speaker Sets Her Agenda,” by The New York Times’ Emma G. Fitzsimmons: “Without criticizing the mayor by name, Ms. Adams repeated her opposition to his budget cuts on Wednesday, focusing on a theme of “People Over Everything.” Mr. Adams, who was seated in the audience, has proposed significant funding cuts across city agencies, including reducing the budget for 3-K by $567 million.”

Eric Adams raps Kamala Harris over migrant crisis: ‘Too much in her portfolio’” by New York Post’s Bernadette Hogan and Bruce Golding: “Mayor Eric Adams appeared to lash out at Vice President Kamala Harris over the city’s $4.2 billion migrant crisis — marking the first time he’s explicitly faulted President Biden’s controversial ‘border czar.’”

Feds say NYC has been able to apply for FEMA migrant crisis aid since last week despite Adams official’s claim,” by Daily News’ Chris Sommerfeldt: “Mayor Adams’ administration has since last week been able to apply for more migrant crisis funding from the federal government — despite claims to the contrary from Hizzoner’s budget chief.”

Shakeup in Hochul administration with top execs facing scrutiny,” by Times Union’s Brendan J. Lyons: “New York's former acting budget director was forced from her position on Monday and a high-ranking official in the state Office of Information Technology Services is taking a voluntary leave of absence amid an examination of whether government contracts they worked on had followed procurement guidelines. State officials said Rajiv Rao, deputy chief information officer for technology and chief technology officer at the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS), is currently using accrued vacation time. He went on leave Tuesday, a day after acting Budget Director Sandra L. Beattie departed her position.”

Kathy Hochul Is on the Brink of 3 Wars With Her Own Party,” by Errol Louis for the Intelligencer: “It turns out that the continuing battle to name the state’s next chief judge may be the least of Governor Kathy Hochul’s challenges over the next few months. With only a few weeks to go before this year’s budget deadline, Governor Hochul has squared off in a series of conflicts with Democrats and nominal political allies — legislators, public unions, suburban leaders, and Mayor Adams — that will test her ability to govern in a less combative style than her famously pugnacious predecessor, Andrew Cuomo.”

NY Democrat’s push to directly elect NYPD commissioner blasted as ‘worst idea ever,’” by New York Post’s Zach Williams: “State Sen. Leroy Comrie is proposing the New York police commissioner become an elected position – despite mockery over how the idea could spell disaster if ever implemented.”

New Yorkers in NYC’s poorest neighborhoods face higher housing discrimination, analysis finds,” by WNYC’s David Brand: “New Yorkers living in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods are more likely to face discrimination if they’re receiving assistance to pay for rent, according to a new analysis by a pair of nonprofits. Unlock NYC and Neighbors Together mapped roughly 1,500 reports of ‘source of income’ discrimination complaints lodged against brokers and landlords since 2018. Both groups, which help people who have housing vouchers find homes, found that the highest rates of complaints occurred in northern Manhattan and central Brooklyn, along with parts of the northeast Bronx.”
