Image source: Win McNamee/Getty Images | After Republicans failed to elect a new Speaker of the House, progressive New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in with her thoughts. Ocasio-Cortez said she feels "coalition government" could be a viable option if Republicans are unable to elect a speaker. Being that Kevin McCarthy lost his bid to become speaker on Tuesday, she feels the GOP should take her suggestion. This would require McCarthy to enter into negotiations with Democrats to gain the votes needed for him to become Speaker of the House. But of course several concessions would need to be made and Democrats would put several stipulations on any deals made with McCarthy. But are we really heading in that direction? If so, what exactly does "coalition government" entail, and what does it mean for the GOP as a whole? (read more)

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, exclaimed "this is bulls—-" Tuesday during a House GOP Conference meeting regarding House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's bid for speaker. McCarthy, R-Calif., made the remark Tuesday morning during a speech aimed at uniting his party prior to the leadership vote. McCarthy faces opposition for speaker from Boebert, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and members of the House Freedom Caucus, who claim he has not proven himself deserving of the new Republican majority's speakership. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, who had already indicated he would likely vote against McCarthy, left little room for doubt that he would support another candidate. Perry's statement follows a letter he and eight members of the House Freedom Caucus sent to McCarthy on Sunday, outlining their plan for the structure of party leadership. Tuesday, Perry added that he would support McCarthy if he complies with their demands. (read more)

Candra Evans and Terrell Evans of Las Vegas, Nevada, are suing the Clark County School District over their high school-aged daughter's assignment. The lawsuit alleges that the student was asked to read an expletive-laced monologue that was later deemed inappropriate to be publicly read at a school board meeting. The lawsuit is aimed at Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara as well as the teacher over "unlawful grooming and abuse of a minor" involving the "pornographic material." Candra Evans says the assignment was assigned in March and required students to write a monologue and perform another student's writing. Evans says the monologue assigned to her daughter "contained explicit, obscene and sexually violent material." She also claims the teacher helped the student construct and edit the vulgar monologue. Here's the monologue in question…do you agree with the parents? (read more) |
