👋 Good morning! Welcome back.

Today's word count: 1,411 words (5 minutes).

Let's sports...

1 big thing: 🏈 13 Sundays down, 5 to go
Joe Burrow

Sunday's NFL slate may have been the best of the season, featuring five games between teams with at least seven wins, Axios' Jeff Tracy writes.

  • Bengals 27, Chiefs 24: Joe Burrow improved to 3-0 against Patrick Mahomes, whose 26-game win streak in November and December finally came to an end. CIN 8-4, KC 9-4.
  • 49ers 33, Dolphins 17: The good news? San Francisco has won five straight. The bad news? Jimmy Garoppolo (broken foot) is out for the year. SF 8-4, MIA 8-4.
  • Vikings 27, Jets 22: Minny completed its season sweep of the AFC East, going 4-0 against the league's second-best division. MIN 10-2, NYJ 7-5.
  • Commanders 20, Giants 20 (OT): New York's Graham Gano missed a 58-yard FG as time expired, cementing the NFL's second 20-20 tie of the season. NYG 7-4-1, WAS 7-5-1.
  • Eagles 35, Titans 10: Eagles WR A.J. Brown had a monster day (8-119-2) against his former team and Jalen Hurts exploded for 380 passing yards and 4 total TD. PHI 11-1, TEN 7-5.

More from Sunday:

  • 787-786: The Packers' 28-19 win over the Bears was Green Bay's 787th regular-season win, surpassing Chicago's 786 to make them the winningest franchise in NFL history.
  • Huge quarter: The Cowboys scored 33 points in the fourth quarter of their 54-19 win over the Colts on "Sunday Night Football," tied for the second-most fourth quarter points ever.
  • Historic tumble: The Rams fell to 3-9 after their 27-23 loss to the Seahawks, clinching a losing season and sending them to the worst 12-game start ever by a defending Super Bowl champion.
  • Rocky debut: Deshaun Watson (12/22, 131 yards, INT) was ineffective and booed in his return, but the Browns still beat the Texans, 27-14, thanks to their defense and special teams (scoop-and-score, punt return, pick-six).

2. 🏈 The playoff field is set

The College Football Playoff field was unveiled on Sunday and features three teams that have been here before and one that hasn't.

By the numbers: Georgia may be the No. 1 team in the country, but No. 2 Michigan has the easier path to the national championship game, according to oddsmakers.

  • Georgia is a 6.5-point favorite over Ohio State, per Caesars Sportsbook, while Michigan is a 9.5-point favorite over TCU.
  • Yes, but: Georgia remains the favorite to win the national title at -135, followed by Michigan (+290), Ohio State (+350) and TCU (+1600).

What to watch: If Michigan and Ohio State meet in the title game, it will be the second straight year that we get a rivalry rematch. Last season, Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC title game, but Georgia got revenge in the national championship game.

Quick notes:

  • New blood: TCU is the first Big 12 team not named Oklahoma to reach the playoff.
  • Rare matchup: Georgia-Ohio State is just the second-ever matchup between the two storied programs, and the first since 1993.

3. ⚽️ World Cup snapshot: 12 teams remain
Bracket: Axios Visuals

Three European countries and one South American country are through to the World Cup quarterfinals after winning this weekend.

State of play: All four teams are ranked in the top 10 in the world and all four have been here multiple times before.

  • Argentina (No. 3 in the world) has won two World Cups (1978, 1986).
  • France (No. 4) has won two World Cups, including the most recent one (1998, 2018).
  • England (No. 5) has won one World Cup (1966).
  • Netherlands (No. 8) has never won, but has been runner-up three times (1974, 1978, 2010).

The big picture: Qatar 2022 has featured some huge upsets and not a single team went 3-0 in the group stage. But overall, it's been pretty chalky: the eight favorites entering the tournament are all still alive.

Go deeper ... A few reads for those still reeling from the USMNT's 3-1 loss to the Netherlands on Saturday.

Fred McGriff

⚾️ HOF vote: Fred McGriff was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday by the inaugural Contemporary Era Committee. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling were among those denied.

🏈 Deion to Colorado: Colorado has hired Deion Sanders away from Jackson State on a deal worth $29.5 million over five years, per AP.

⚾️ Jacob to Texas: After outspending every other team last offseason, the Rangers are at it again, signing former Mets ace Jacob deGrom to a five-year, $185 million contract.

🏀 Four straight Ls: Virginia Tech handed UNC its fourth straight loss on Sunday. The preseason No. 1 Tar Heels will likely fall out of the top 25 in today's men's basketball poll.

5. ⚾️ The return of the Winter Meetings

MLB's Winter Meetings are back in person for the first time in three years, and a free-agent frenzy is expected across the four-day event, which began Sunday, Jeff writes.

State of play: Hundreds of team reps and player agents have taken over San Diego's Manchester Grand Hyatt, where a record $1.07 billion worth of contracts were handed out to 19 free agents in 2019.

Between the lines: The top free agents can be broken into three groups: shortstops, starting pitchers, and Aaron Judge.

  • Shortstops: Four studs — all World Series champs since 2017 — will cost teams a lot of money. Trea Turner (29 years old) and Carlos Correa (28) could get almost $300 million; Xander Bogaerts (30) and Dansby Swanson (28) should command $150+ million.
  • Starting pitchers: Jacob deGrom is off the board after Friday's mega-deal with the Rangers, but the Mets may replace him with Justin Verlander. Carlos Rodón has plenty of suitors after compiling a 2.67 ERA since 2021.
  • Judge: The reigning MVP and new AL home run king is likely to receive nine years and at least $300 million, probably from either the Yankees or Giants.

The backdrop: The Winter Meetings were canceled last year amid MLB's longest-ever lockout.

Coming up: MLB's first-ever draft lottery takes place tomorrow, with the 18 non-playoff teams vying for the top six picks. The Nationals, A's and Pirates have the best odds (16.5%) to land the No. 1 pick.

Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis is playing out of his mind right now.

By the numbers: Davis had 55 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks in Sunday's win over the Wizards, his 10th straight monster double-double. In those 10 games, he's averaging 34.2 points, 15.4 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks.

  • 55-17-3
  • 44-10-3
  • 27-12-3
  • 25-13-4
  • 25-15-3
  • 37-21-5
  • 30-18-1
  • 38-16-4
  • 37-18-0
  • 24-14-3

The big picture: The Lakers have won eight of those 10 games to improve to 10-12 and put themselves just two games out of playoff position.
