Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 420 words, a 1.5-minute read.

1 big thing: "Not your ordinary cold front"
Data: NOAA; Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

Towns across the Mountain West are experiencing staggering temperature drops, Axios' Andrew Freedman reports.

  • In Dillon, Montana, the temp fell a staggering 26 degrees in just three minutes.
  • Casper, Wyoming, saw the temperature nosedive from 27°F to 3°F in 15 minutes.

Zoom out: "This is not your ordinary cold front," the National Weather Service warned.

  • As the cold front pushes south, temperatures just behind it are plummeting and winds are dramatically increasing, potentially causing damage.
  • Computer models are showing the potential for a "flash freeze" in multiple states.
  • Nearly 200 million people are under winter weather warnings or advisories, from Montana to Alabama.

The bottom line: The Arctic air, strong winds and an associated bomb cyclone could be deadly to anyone caught outside — and will bring some areas to a standstill during the holiday rush.
