As America is just 17 days from the midterm elections, we aren't the only nation scrambling to decide who will be in charge. It was a wild weekend over in the United Kingdom. For a minute there, it seemed like there was a chance that Boris Johnson would be back at the helm. But yesterday, he decided that wouldn't be the right thing to do. Now, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak has emerged as the clear frontrunner. According to the AP, he has promised "integrity, professionalism, and accountability" if he forms a government — a nod to the growing desire for a leader who can tackle the country's problems. So what do we really know about the former Treasury chief turned frontrunner? And how soon could he take the top slot in the United Kingdom? And even more importantly, what doesn't Rishi Sunak want the public to know? (read more)

After the forthcoming midterm elections, the Democrats' razor-thin majority in the House is at risk of disappearing entirely, and the current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, is refusing to speculate on her own future in the position. Pelosi was asked by the anchor of CBS's "Face the Nation," Margaret Brennan, if she expects to remain in her party's leadership in the next Congress. However, the California Democrat refused to discuss the matter during their interview on CBS's "Face the Nation" on a Sunday. Pelosi responded, "I'm not talking about that. I'm here to talk about how we win the election." Brennan pursued the matter by asking whether or not that indicates that Pelosi will stay in her role as the leader of the party. Pelosi refused to either confirm or reject the claim. Following the reluctance of leaders to call up legislation that would impose stricter stock trading limits on members of Congress, Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger of Virginia called for a change at the top in the month of September. Pelosi's position as speaker is, of course, more at risk should Republicans succeed in their efforts to seize control of the House of Representatives. (read more)

Although the stock market may appear gloomy at the moment, there is cause for celebration. The rapid slump this year has a broad basis and has led to multi-year lows in the share values of several corporations. As a result, the baby has essentially been tossed out with the bathwater, and respectable businesses are also experiencing unjustified drops in worth. Investors may worry about slower growth rates, but astute investors understand that good businesses will eventually recover even stronger. A strong brand, devoted clients, and sustainable tailwinds that can propel the business to new heights are vital characteristics to keep an eye out for. These characteristics are what make these three stocks attractive to own, as they have what it takes to continue doing well once the twin scourges of high inflation and rising interest rates abate. When a car was dropped off for service at a Florida car dealership recently, shop mechanics were in for quite the surprise. A technician for the Toyota dealership realized there was something wedged in the front grille of the vehicle when they went to pull the car into the shop for repairs. As it turns out, it was a coyote. And in an even more bizarre twist to the story, the coyote was still alive, it was just unable to crawl out from the grille since it was stuck. It is unclear how long the animal had been wedged in the car's grille. Mechanics reached out to the St. Francis Wildlife Association for assistance with removing the live coyote from the car. Here's how that turned out. (read more) |
