TOP NEWS Biden takes executive action on abortion Samuel Corum/AFP via Getty Images President Joe Biden signed an executive order to protect access to reproductive health care services on Friday — two weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. [CNN / Kate Sullivan] The executive order directs Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to safeguard access to abortion medication, emergency medical care, and contraception, and to report to the president on his progress in 30 days. [New York Times / Michael D. Schear and Sheryl Gay Stolberg] Other provisions include: Protecting the privacy and data of people seeking abortion care, and gathering lawyers to defend abortion patients and providers against legal challenges. [Associated Press / Seung Min Kim, Zeke Miller, and Chris Megerian] However, the executive order doesn't include using federal lands to provide abortions, which some Democrats wanted. The White House has said that move would have "dangerous ramifications." During his speech Friday, he urged voters to elect lawmakers who would vote to codify Roe. [AP / Mari Yamaguchi, Chisato Tanaka, and Foster Klug] The suspected gunman shot Abe, 67, from behind. Security officers tackled and arrested the suspect, who reportedly used a handmade weapon. [NPR / Catie Dull] The killing is shocking since Japan has strict gun laws. Gun violence and political violence are rare. He helped rebuild Japan's economy and international standing, but his efforts to expand military use were unpopular.
