Plus, the abortion hidden in the subtext of Rapunzel.
Dear book clubbers, We are well and truly in the thick of summer now! Here in New York, the days are long and hot and sun-drenched, and it is the season for curling up with a good, thick, just-frivolous-enough book. It is not, however, the season for more Zooming. Therefore! The Vox Book Club will be going on summer hiatus for July and August. Read many wonderful books, and meet us again in September, when it will be the back-to-school season and we are all ready to spend our afternoons with our screens once again. We'll continue sending out these newsletters once a month to keep you up to date on what's going on in the book world. And in the meantime, you can relive last night's conversation with Vauhini Vara at Vox's Facebook Live. |

Here's some of the best writing about books and related subjects published across the internet in the past two weeks. - At the New York Times magazine, Elaine Blair explores the world of sex ed books for children.
- At LitHub, Lidia Yuknavitch describes her four perfect writing spaces.
- At the New Yorker, Katy Waldman interviews the great mythologist Marina Warner about everything from the abortion hidden in "Rapunzel" to the ways libraries are shaped like life.
- At Bon Appetit, Amanda Arnold uncovers the Italian futurist cookbook that declared pasta effeminate and veal with anchovies and bananas the wave of the future.
- At the Millions, Ana Quiring delves into the ways the new queer Regency romance novels are reinventing the class politics of the genre.
- At the Atlantic, Kelsey Osgood profiles the women trying to bring conservative Anabaptist writing into a new era.
- In the Paris Review, Elisa Gonzalez reads the poetry of Marilyn Monroe.
- For the Guardian, Edward Posnett visits Pieve Santo Stefano, Tuscany, where any Italian can enter their diary into the archives.
Happy reading, Constance |
