Homelessness is an issue in just about every single metropolitan area across America. Between the pandemic and now worsening economic conditions, making ends meet isn't as simple as getting a job. Housing costs are insanely high, and only getting higher. But while homelessness is practically universal, solving it is not. That's why it's worth looking at how two different areas are tackling the problem in very different ways, and which one side of the coin is doing a better job of it. (read more) |

It's one thing to know how big your Social Security benefits will be in retirement. It's another thing entirely to know how much of them you'll actually get to put in your pocket. Finding out that figure can be impacted by a number of things like how old you are when you start claiming your benefits, what year you were born and how much income you've generated throughout your career. But taxes are one thing many retirees fail to take into account. And if you live in one of these 12 states, you have to worry about state and federal taxes eating into your benefits. While you can take steps to avoid some of these tax implications, that isn't always possible. If you live in one of these states, here's what you should start preparing for today. (read more) |

When questioned on Sunday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez refused to endorse President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential race. AOC swiftly changed the subject after awkwardly laughing off the idea of supporting her political party's own president. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) over Biden in the 2020 Democratic primary. And there are Democrats across the country who are privately concerned about Biden's leadership abilities. For many leaders within the party, the current polling for Democrats means Republicans are likely to take back Congress. If that happens, it could be seen as an indictment of the Biden administration. You know things are really bad when well-known Democrats can't even voice support for their president on live TV. One US city is struggling so much with public urination that it is being forced to install special urine sensors in elevators to try to help the problem. City officials plan to launch the pilot program this summer to try to reduce the number of cases of people urinating inside elevators. Officials say it's not only unsanitary, but it can also damage elevators. The special sensors will be installed on the ceiling of elevators and is equipped with a small fan that will suck air in. The sensor will be able to smell what is present in the elevator, including urine. Alarms will sound and lights will flash when urine is detected. The affected elevator will then be rendered inoperable until it is inspected and cleaned. So, which northeast US city is installing these sensors because of the public urination problem? Elon Musk has offered up some advice for his followers. Musk says it's better to invest in physical things when inflation increases. "As a general principle, for those looking for advice from this thread, it is generally better to own physical things like a home or stock in companies you think make good products, than dollars when inflation is high," Musk tweeted, adding that he will not sell his bitcoin, Ethereum or Doge. Real estate in general, namely single-family homes, multi-family homes, self-storage, and farmland tends to perform well for investors during years of high inflation. And while buying property might not currently be a feasible thing for some investors, buying shares of real estate is also a good option. Some other physical properties that many invest in is fine art (which has outperformed the S&P 500 for the past 25 years and appreciates at an average rate of 23.2%), and wine (which is up 10.3% year-to-date and 25.6% over the past year).
