Rep. Madison Cawthorn lost the Republican primary for his House seat in North Carolina on Tuesday — halting the young, pro-Trump congressman's rise after a series of scandals plagued his short tenure in Washington.
Cawthorn's campaign said he conceded the race to state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who rose to the top of a packed Republican primary and secured endorsements from North Carolina's most powerful Republicans, including Sen. Thom Tillis. A super PAC that had previously backed Tillis ran ads targeting Cawthorn's "lies" and quoted a newspaper columnist calling him an "attention-seeking embarrassment."
Cawthorn campaigned aggressively, blaming his woes on "RINOs" and the mainstream media. But voters were unwilling to give him a second chance following Cawthorn's political stumbles, from calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "thug" to alleging he'd been invited to orgies by Washington lawmakers. His downfall comes even after former President Donald Trump offered support for the embattled Republican.
