AHRQ Views Blog: Seeking Input on a Strategic Framework for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund Investments

AHRQ's request for public input on its draft strategic framework for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) Trust Fund investments is the subject of a new AHRQ Views blog post. Karin Rhodes, M.D., M.S., chief implementation officer, and David Meyers, deputy director, note that a new request for information in the Federal Register sends an exciting signal about future initiatives designed to ensure widespread use of PCOR findings to positively impact health outcomes. AHRQ has already supported dissemination and training initiatives that resulted in important advances in implementation of PCOR findings. With the recent reauthorization of the PCOR Trust Fund, the agency is eager to develop new PCOR initiatives and projects to support the dissemination and implementation of PCOR evidence into practice and train researchers to partner with patients, families and communities to conduct PCOR. COVID-19-Related Hospitalizations for Children Rare But More Serious Than Flu Hospitalizations

COVID kid

While hospitalizations of children for COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) were less than those for seasonal flu from January to March 2021, the severity of COVID-19 had an impact as high as flu outbreaks in earlier years, new AHRQ research has found. The research, published as a Research Letter in JAMA Pediatrics, reviewed data from AHRQ's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project and found that during the study period, COVID-19-related hospitalizations occurred at a rate of 10.8 per 100,000 population for children aged 5 to 11, with half the cases having MIS-C. This rate was lower than flu hospitalizations for children in a "normal" flu year (2017), but the COVID-19/MIS-C cases were considered more serious, making their impact similar, researchers said. New Data Visualization Shows Antipsychotic and Antidepressant Use and Expenses in the United States

data viz

A new data visualization shows that while the number of prescriptions for antipsychotic medications increased from 2013 to 2018, expenditures decreased. The visualization allows users to explore trends in the use of antidepressants and antipsychotics, as well as expenditures, according to age group, sex, race/ethnicity and family poverty status. Estimates are based on the 2013 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Household Component and the 2018 MEPS-Household Component.
