As America reckons with elements of systemic racism around the country, schools are responding by expanding curriculums with initiatives inspired by tenets of a decades-old legal theory known as Critical Race Theory. In response, some legislatures are beginning to ban a broad range of topics in classrooms, raising questions about their real intentions, and whether the bans are blocking not just new lessons on race but also preventing long-established ideas from being taught.
