NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable and NHLBI Director Dr. Gary H. Gibbons have been selected together as joint finalists for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals

Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and Dr. Gary H. Gibbons, Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, have been selected together as joint finalists for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals (also known as the Sammies).

On Wednesday, May 5, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, the Partnership will co-host a virtual event to announce the finalists. Registration is available here.

They are recognized in the COVID-19 Response category for their work which developed and implemented federal programs to increase testing as well as participation in COVID-19 treatment and vaccine trials in underserved communities across the country. The highlighted programs are: Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Against COVID-19 Disparities and Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP).

The 2021 Sammies will honor the heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic response and other outstanding public servants. The award recipients will be announced in the fall. For more information, visit Service to America Medals.
