Two public awareness campaigns developed by researchers and rural community members improved community knowledge of opioid use disorder and the availability of medication-assisted treatment options, according to an AHRQ-funded study published in The Journal of Rural Health. Newspaper articles, posters, program inserts and movie ads presented locally relevant, actionable messages about opioid use disorder to residents of 24 rural Colorado counties. Nearly half of about 800 residents reported viewing at least one product. Respondents who were exposed to a greater number of campaign materials were more likely to understand the threat of opioid abuse in rural communities, view opioid addiction as a chronic disease and believe that the disorder can be treated locally. Study authors recommended that locally developed strategies should be included in comprehensive approaches to stem the opioid use disorder epidemic. Registration is open for a webinar on June 2 from 1 to 2 pm ET on the new Diagnostic Safety Supplemental Item Set for the Medical Office Surveys on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS®). The supplemental items assess the extent to which a medical office's culture supports the diagnostic process, accurate diagnoses and communication around diagnoses. Speakers will provide background on the importance of diagnostic safety, an overview of the development of the items and results from a pilot test in 66 medical offices, and will share resources available for users. | AHRQ in the Professional Literature Patient insurance status is associated with care received after transfer among pediatric patients in the emergency department.
