1 big thing: Rockets rain as Gaza crisis escalates

Axios contributor Barak Ravid reports from Tel Aviv: Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups fired dozens of rockets from the Gaza Strip toward Tel Aviv and other cities in central Israel on Tuesday night.

Why it matters: It's a new step in the current conflict that's likely to be followed by increased Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

  • At least 28 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes over the past 24 hours, including 10 children, according to health officials in Gaza.

Air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv at 8:45pm local time (1:45pm ET), and sounded again five more times over the next half hour.

  • Most of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome aerial defense system but several hit populated areas. At least one Israeli civilian was killed and several dozen injured.
  • The barrage of rockets forced the closure of Israel's international airport for two hours.

What we're watching: Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said the military campaign was just beginning, and was designed to restore calm for the long term.

  • A spokesman for Hamas' military wing said that if the Israeli strikes continue, Hamas will undertake a missile assault that exceeds what was seen on Monday afternoon in Southern Israel.

2. A rare 99.75% stat

Fodder for happy hour: 99.75% of patients admitted to Cleveland Clinic hospitals for COVID from Jan. 1 to April 13 hadn't been fully vaccinated, according to data provided to Axios.

  • Why it matters: It's one of the most vivid illustrations yet — get vaccinated, stay out of the hospital.

Among Cleveland Clinic employees, 0.3% of infections occurred in those who were fully vaccinated, Axios' Oriana Gonzalez reports.

Broadway's yearlong COVID shutdown is nearing an end as "Hamilton," "Wicked" and "The Lion King" reopen on Sept. 14, the first day allowed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Variety reports.

Cast members announced the news on "Good Morning America" and released a statement:

This rare alliance between three of Broadway's fan favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries.

Of businesses with less than $1 million in revenue:
