I am torn between the knowledge that everyone needs to be cut some slack now more than ever and my deep deep loathing of everyone which is greater than ever

Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. If you're torn between love and loathing right now, you're not alone.

  2. I read music books when I'm low or I need to reset. I'm really enjoying Ian MacDonald's Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties. (Have you heard of The Beatles? They're pretty good.)

  3. Covers for books I don't intend to write.

  4. Tim Kreider on becoming a meme and the risks we take when we put ourselves into the world. (His essay collection We Learn Nothing is a contemporary classic.)

  5. A profile of Twyla Tharp, who is the subject of an American Masters documentary coming out today. (It's worth noting that she wrote a great book about creative work, The Creative Habit, and published a sequel a few years ago called Keep It Moving.)

  6. Coconut The Owl has gone missing. I tried to bring her back with block prints.

  7. Ear candy: Radiohead's In Rainbows From The Basement and a playlist of surprise saxophone. (Don't like Radiohead or the saxophone? More for me!)

  8. Podcast: we went pretty deep on this episode of Unmistakable Creative, starting with religion and continuing with other topics you're supposed to avoid in polite conversation. (As Linus van Pelt tells us, "There are 3 things I've learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and The Great Pumpkin.")

  9. RIP actress Jessica Walter. I loved her as Lucille Bluth on Arrested Development.

  10. Books that got me through this winter.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, you can forward it to someone who'd like it, listen to read my books, shop for some of my favorite gear (I get a cut), buy a t-shirt, or hire me to speak.

If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here.

xoxo,
