Hello all—
Fall weather has finally arrived here in D.C. where I live—the maple trees are a fiery red and the ginkgos are about to turn a golden yellow (and stinky). It is also a sign that ski season is about here—Colorado is already getting snow. This week's feature story is a fascinating but terrifying report from Lucy Sherriff on the devastation being wrought by pine beetles. They're freaking out ski resorts, messing with recreational hunters, and the federal government has them on par with wildfires.

If you enjoy journeying to places where the imagination can recreate a lost masterpiece, you love abandoned places, or you have a passion for creative reuse, Ruin and Redemption in Architecture Dan Barasch, is the book for you.
With its snazzy half-cover in reflective gold—perfect for any deserving coffee table— the book is divided into three parts. The first dives into places that are gone--from the Hall of Nations in New Delhi to the Singer Building in NYC. The second section focuses on those that are still standing, but have been abandoned--from the Torre de David in Caracas to the Council of Ministries in Georgia. And finally, and perhaps most fun for travelers, the third section focuses on once abandoned places that have been redeemed by designers and architect with vision. Think the Grain Silo Complex (now the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art and the iconic Silo Hotel) in Cape Town or the former Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, England which is no the Bombay Sapphire Distillery.
