Hi there. Sandiganbayan junks last 6 coco levy civil cases

They're off the hook, for good: The Sandiganbayan has thrown out the remaining six coco levy ill-gotten wealth cases against Marcos Sr., Imelda, and the late tycoon Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., citing the 37-year delay in the cases' prosecution.

Following the Senate, the House has also approved a bill that would extend up to 99 years, from the current 50, the period in which private land can be leased to a foreign investor, who would be allowed to sublet the property.

No to splitting Leyte: Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla and 41 mayors are opposing a proposal filed by actor-lawmaker Richard Gomez to split the province into two provinces -- a move "totally uncalled for," said those against the measure.

Mega-businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan's "new apple of the eye is tourism," reports Tina Arceo-Dumlao in Business. That's why "he has set his sights on investing up north, in Camp John Hay to be exact," given its "yet-to-be-fully-tapped potential."

Another day, another horrific school shooting in the US -- but this time the shooter is a 15-year-old girl, who opened fire in a Wisconsin classroom and killed a fellow student and a teacher and wounded six others before killing herself.

E-market as a tool against corruption

The belief was that with the procurement process recorded and posted electronically for all Filipinos to see, including the evaluation of bids, awarding of contracts, monitoring of performance, and delivery of goods and services, corruption—estimated back in 2019 to cost Filipino citizens at least P700 billion yearly—will be minimized if not eradicated.

MOTORING

No safety culture

It's really beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Philippines. Besides the cool weather and the likes of Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey on constant airplay, the blinking colors of Christmas lights and parols (lanterns) are accompanied by a daily sea of white and red lights on major thoroughfares like EDSA and C-5. The increase in road congestion has reduced progress to a crawl, day or night, dampening some of the holiday cheer.

Keeping a 'survivor' alive in Intramuros

The 19th-century pipe organ of the San Agustin Church in Intramuros—a survivor of World War II—is in need of another round of restoration to ensure its continued use. For this purpose, the Augustinians of the Convento de San Agustin held the San Agustin International Music Festival on Sept. 7, Nov. 14 and Dec. 13. These shows also celebrated the 420th anniversary of the church construction's completion .
