Your Saturday Stoic Review — Week of November 18-24
You have been given an incredibly powerful tool—this brain and imagination of yours. But like a gun or a knife, it can just as easily harm the user as it can protect or serve them. We have to train and discipline ourselves, we have to direct these resources properly. We have to channel our creativity not into fear and anxiety, but into purpose and progress.
In a recent video on theDaily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday shares six of the biggest misconceptions about Stoicism, including the idea that the Stoics are "morbid":
"Seneca says don't put stuff off and don't think of death as this thing in the future far away that you don't have to consider—instead, think of death as something that's happening right now. We are always dying. We have to get up close and familiar with it, we have to know what it is because it's happening to us constantly, and we want to let that inform how we live and the decisions we make."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday spoke to philosophy professor Dr. Jennifer Baker after filming for hisnew Masterclass Using Ancient Wisdom to Solve Modern Problems. During the podcast, they discuss how Jennifer teaches the next generation about Stoicism, why Stoicism is a timeless tool we can all turn to, and the ethics of conversation:
"You have to put in the work. There has to be something behind your opinions, you have to test them in action, or else they're just [opinions]."
