UP FOR SCRUTINY These screengrabs of acknowledgment receipts, already redacted when shown in a Nov. 5 House hearing on the expenditures of the Office of the Vice President, have roused suspicions that they were issued by just one person using a false name. One receipt was signed by a "Mary Grace Piattos," whose surname sounds like a brand of potato chips. —COURTESY OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Hi there. House to focus next on cops facing Duterte drug war raps

Ex-president Duterte had said he assumed "full responsibility" for his bloody war on drugs. Now the House is looking into the criminal and administrative cases faced by cops who said they merely followed their superiors' orders  in enforcing the drug war.

"Nuisance candidates, or [those without a] serious intent to run for election"—that's how the Comelec described the 117 senatorial aspirants who were disqualified by the poll body based on the recommendation of its law department.

No lavish Christmas parties this year for government agencies, per a Palace directive, "in solidarity with the millions of our countrymen who continue to grieve over lives, homes and livelihoods lost" after the six successive typhoons that hit the country.

The climate at the UN Climate Conference being held in Baku, Azerbaijan has become decidedly chilly, with participants disagreeing on the new finance targets —estimated at $1.3T a year by 2035—to help poorer nations adapt to climate change.

In Opinion, historian Ambeth Ocampo revisits the unhappy circumstances of Josephine Bracken, the orphaned common-law wife of national hero Jose Rizal who "lived a short life, alternating between romance and tragedy."

Teaching kids financial responsibility

Since the only vegan items in my kids' school canteen are turon and taho, my children barely spend their allowance and instead use it to sustain their expensive Starbucks habit. I rarely buy from Starbucks but they love their fancy coconut chai tea latte and iced pomegranate pearls hibiscus tea. Now it's sticker season, and they're crazy over who can get a planner first.
