Donald Trump said he will nominate former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his attorney general, hours after his first pick for the role, former Rep. Matt Gaetz, withdrew from consideration for the position. "I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, praising Bondi for her past experience. Bondi, who served as Florida's Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, appeared with Trump on the campaign trail in the final days leading up to the 2024 election. Trump said in a statement she will be able to "refocus" the Justice Department. "For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans - Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again," Trump said in the post. "I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!" Read the latest
