Good Tuesday morning, Illinois. There are 3 surprising consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court’s immunity decision, reports POLITICO’s Kyle Cheney.

TOP TALKER

KA-CHING: The Democratic National Convention is on track to raise more money than any Democratic convention ever, according to organizers.

But they’re not there yet. The host committee led by Chicago businessman Michael Sacks has received plenty of commitments, but until it’s in the bank, no one’s saying they’re finished raising the $85 million-plus needed to put on the four-day show in August.

The Tribune has a big take: “Corporations, labor unions and Democratic political organizations have opened their checkbooks to help the Chicago DNC committee raise the money needed for what could be one of the most expensive political conventions in history,” reports Dan Petrella.

An added twist: Everyone’s watching to see if last week’s debate kerfuffle will have an impact on giving. It hasn’t so far, acknowledged Natalie Edelstein, spokeswoman for the convention.

Working hard for the money: “Our team is laser focused on the work ahead,” Edelstein told Playbook. “The host committee is grateful for the broad coalition of partners that continue to come together to support our city and this historic convention.”

The host committee operates as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, so fundraising disclosure forms won’t be filed until well after the convention.

What we do know: Gov. JB Pritzker, who vowed the convention wouldn’t go into debt, is working behind the scenes, too.

“Gov. Pritzker is excited to welcome the DNC to Chicago in August and has made clear from the beginning that the convention efforts have his full support. That includes helping the host committee raise from donors across the country,” said Pritzker spokeswoman Christina Amestoy.

He’ll donate, too: Pritzker, who gave $1.25 million for the 2016 Democratic convention in Philadelphia, also plans to donate in his personal capacity for the Chicago event, according to a person from his political campaign.

Corporate sponsors stepping up: United Airlines, McDonald’s, Archer Daniels Midland, CME Group, Cboe Global Markets and Peoples Gas have all donated, as well as numerous unions.

THE BUZZ

HASHING IT OUT: In the closing days of the spring legislative session in May, the Illinois Senate passed a bill to regulate hemp products, including Delta-8 — but some hemp businesses see it as an outright ban and an existential threat to their industry.

The Illinois House didn’t move on the bill, and the governor has expressed support for the legislation, suggesting the House could pass it during the veto session later this year. “I think it should be regulated,” Pritzker told reporters after the legislative session.

Hemp businesses have now written a letter to the governor reiterating their support for strict regulations and accusing the bill’s supporters of ignoring them when the bill was written.

The letter states: “The current proposal, HB 4293, destroys the hemp industry and hurts millions of hemp consumers in Illinois. It will shutter store fronts across the state, leaving thousands jobless. It does nothing to address unsafe hemp products being shipped across our border and favors our out-of-state competitors. But, more than any other interest group, HB 4293 favors multi-billion dollar cannabis companies. This approach is fundamentally unfair and does not deserve your support.” The full text of the letter is here.
