A shortage of buyers for agency mortgage-backed securities (MBS) is causing prices to drop and yields to rise.   Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Reserve, which were major buyers of MBS, are no longer in the picture.   The portfolios of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have significantly reduced since the financial crisis, and the Federal Reserve has stopped buying MBS.   The government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) are also restricted in what they can buy.   The 4th amendment to the preferred stock purchase agreement (PSPA) states that their retained mortgage portfolios will be lowered.   The absence of these buyers has led to widening spreads and declining prices.
