Ombudsman wants COA memos out of public eye


Ombudsman Samuel Martires urged Congress on Monday to drop the provisions in the annual national budget regarding the mandatory publication of Commission on Audit (COA) reports on government agencies to prevent the public from prejudging those involved.

Lifting of rice price cap seen in 2 weeks


Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual on Monday said that the price cap on rice could be lifted within two weeks, noting that the government would have a better grasp of the supply situation by then as the harvest season starts this month alongside the arrival of imports that could stabilize prices.

SMNI hosts sued over Red-tagging


Journalist Alfonso Tomas "Atom" Araullo on Monday filed a P2.07-million lawsuit against broadcasters Lorraine Marie Badoy-Partosa and Jeffrey "Ka Eric" Celiz of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), over claims that he had been Red-tagged by the two in their talk show and in another online program.

A mockery of human rights laws


That the abduction of Castro and Tamano happened just after the country marked the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances on Aug. 31 is a mockery of the country's laws that have proven toothless in the face of a culture that has no respect for human life prevalent within the police and military establishments, and a national government that tolerates such impunity with its continued silence and inaction.
