Maui

The Story

Hawaii is burning up.

Tell me.

Yesterday, at least 36 people were killed in the wildfires in Maui. Since Tuesday, flames have torn through the island's historic town of Lahaina, and destroyed hundreds of businesses and homes. Dozens of people are injured and hundreds of others have had to evacuate. Some people threw themselves into the ocean to escape the blazes. Hurricane Dora has made the rescue situation more difficult by knocking out power and forcing firefighting helicopters to ground. Some people haven't been able to reach 911.

What are people doing to help?

The state's lieutenant gov issued an emergency proclamation and activated the Hawaii National Guard. Almost 2,000 travelers are sheltering in place at Maui's Kahului Airport. Four shelters are also open with more than 1,000 people taking refuge at the largest one. Photos and videos on social media show the flames blazing across the island. Maui county officials called the fires "unprecedented." Others who had to evacuate described the situation as "apocalyptic."

Most people think of Hawaii as a picture-perfect paradise, but it's becoming more prone to wildfires due to the human-caused climate crisis. Now, Maui's dry spell and moderate drought are adding to the devastation.

And Also...This

What's paying up…

X. The company, we are old enough to remember as Twitter, was held in contempt after failing to comply with a search warrant. Earlier this year, special counsel Jack Smith asked the social media company for "data and records" tied to former President Trump's account related to the Jan 6 investigation. The filing also shows that the judge in the case didn't want Trump to be aware of the warrant in case he tried to obstruct evidence or flee prosecution. X objected to the nondisclosure agreement part of the warrant leading to the delay. Now, X has to pay a $350,000 fine for missing the warrant's deadline. It came as Trump was indicted last week for charges relating to the investigation but has pleaded not guilty.

Where there have been more arrests…

Montgomery, AL. Last night, the two remaining suspects in the riverfront brawl over the weekend surrendered to the police. Authorities charged three white boaters with misdemeanor assault charges for allegedly attacking a Black riverboat co-captain. The attack has renewed attention to the city's racial history. More charges are expected as police continue to investigate. A hate crime charge is not expected.

Who people are talking about…

Lil Tay. Yesterday, her Instagram posted that the viral sensation and rapper died at 14 years old. Her father has yet to confirm her death. Lil Tay, whose legal name is Claire Hope, rose to fame when she was 9 years old for her explicit videos. She stopped posting in 2018 amid allegations that her family was exploiting the teen for profit. The family said her and her 21-year-old brother's deaths are under investigation.

What's giving everyone whiplash...

Florida. Yesterday, state officials confirmed they will offer AP psychology after (almost) everyone and their teachers were told they were doing away with it. Despite the controversy around how the state plans to teach sexual and gender identity, the Sunshine State said the course "can be taught consistent with Florida law." So...psyched.

What's jumping on the inflation train…

Verizon, Disney, and Hulu.

Who's talking about *that* 2022 party photo...

Sydney Sweeney.

Who's ready to "Shake It Off" her way...

Taylor Swift.
