On the Hawaiian islands, where Hurricane Dora's impact can be felt to the south and a potent ridge of high pressure to the north, deadly wildfires have killed at least 36 people, and search efforts are ongoing. "As the Lahaina fire remains active, 36 fatalities have already been confirmed, according to the firefighting efforts. There are currently no other facts available, states a press statement from Maui County. As the wildfires continue, visitors with current and planned lodging at West Maui hotels may need other accommodations, Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke said Wednesday as she issued an emergency proclamation to extend the state of emergency to all counties, discourage non-essential air travel to Maui, and order all affected state agencies to assist with the evacuation. Luke stated, "This proclamation is to discourage travel to the affected areas so we can prioritize our limited resources for Maui residents who desperately need assistance." (read more) |

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia claims he is "thinking seriously" about declaring himself an independent before the 2024 election and leaving the Democratic Party. "I'm thinking seriously. For me, I have to have peace of mind, basically," said Manchin during the interview. Manchin noted that he needs more time to think things over before making a choice. Several factors influence why investors choose dividend stocks. One benefit is that they give investors dividend income, which is a bonus on top of capital growth over time. A rise in the stock prices of the corporations in your portfolio is always welcome. The addition of a few additional performance percentage points through dividends is a benefit. Second, companies that pay dividends are frequently more reliable. They also have a propensity to develop gradually and predictably. It's a straightforward yet effective combination that has benefited investors and will do so going forward. It's also wonderful that dividends mitigate the effects of price increases during these inflationary times. Consider these stocks for those seeking income and upside in the current market.
