Senator calls for inquiry into Manila Bay projects


MANILA, Philippines — Sen. JV Ejercito on Sunday urged the Senate blue ribbon committee to look into the "midnight gold rush" approval of 22 reclamation projects around Manila Bay. Specifically, Ejercito questioned the authority of local government units (LGUs) to enter into contracts with private companies, many of which are owned by the Chinese government, to dredge and dump sand off the shores of Manila Bay.

Check school items for lead, warn groups


MANILA, Philippines — With the opening of classes on Aug. 29, BAN Toxics, a watchdog group monitoring toxic products, warned parents on Saturday to be careful in buying school supplies after market surveillance showed that several school items being sold in Divisoria, Manila, had tested positive for lead.

Navotas teen death is murder–lawyers


MANILA, Philippines — The death of 17-year-old Jerhode "Jemboy" Baltazar in the hands of Navotas police should be prosecuted as an act of murder and not as a mere accident, his family's lawyers said on Sunday. National Union of Peoples' Lawyers Frank Tiongson and Kristina Conti protested against the move of the Philippine National Police to charge the six police officers involved in Baltazar's death with the lesser offense of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
