Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has increased its shares in Japan's five largest trading firms, possibly underpinning the strong momentum that has propelled the country's stock market to multi-year highs. Berkshire Hathaway announced Monday that its holdings in Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi Corp, Mitsui & Co, and Sumitomo now total more than 8.5%. It first announced the purchases in 2020, and the current purchases are consistent with its long-term objectives to hold the stakes and raise them to as much as 9.9%. Buffett's investments, as well as his confidence about Japan's future, have brought attention to the country's stronger economy and shareholder-friendly corporate governance reforms, which have helped back the Nikkei share average's spectacular rally. US intelligence officials are reporting that China has plans to station troops close to our border. According to the report, Chinese officials are in talks with Cuba to establish a military training facility there. The new facility would be a joint effort between the two countries, and US intelligence says the talks "are at an advanced stage but not concluded." Establishing a military facility in Cuba would allow China to permanently station troops less than 100 miles from the US. After learning of China's plans, the Biden administration reached out to Cuba to try to talk them out of the agreement with China. (read more) |

AI is by far the biggest tech investing trend of 2023. But Ross Givens says the #1 artificial intelligence stock is NOT Microsoft, Google, Amazon or Apple. Nope — his research is pointing to a tiny, under-the-radar stock that’s trading for just $3 dollars right now… And could soon shoot to the moon, handing early investors a windfall. This company already has 98 registered patents for cutting-edge voice and sound recognition technology… And has lined up major partnerships with Honda, Netflix, Pandora, Mercedes Benz and many, many others. So if you missed out on Microsoft when it first went public back in 1986… This could be your shot at redemption.

An order to prevent former president Donald Trump from disclosing the evidence the Department of Justice has against him in the case involving his handling of sensitive documents was approved by a federal judge on Monday. To prevent Trump from maintaining any evidence or referencing it online, DOJ special counsel Jack Smith requested a protective order, which Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart granted. Trump was charged with 37 counts by Smith and the DOJ for keeping secret records at his Florida property, Mar-a-Lago. In May, a New York judge ordered a similar action in the state's lawsuit against Trump involving alleged hush money payments. According to prosecutors, they want to safeguard "sensitive and confidential information." (read more)

Analysts, investors, and the media focus only on mega-cap tech stocks and well-known brands. Unfortunately, some underappreciated stocks have outperformed the overall market by a significant margin and piled up enormous gains over both the short and long term. These are typically the stocks of specialized businesses that cater to a specific industry or sector of the economy. Many extraordinarily well-run small and medium-sized businesses operate covertly as niche market specialists. Their executives don't appear on CNBC, and their ticker symbols aren't splashed across the front page of The Wall Street Journal. However, these firms are chugging along to significant gains for owners like the little engine that might. These three undervalued stocks have the potential to make you wealthy. (read more) |

Allegations that three employees of an assisted living facility in North Carolina were running an activity akin to a fight club with elderly dementia patients led to their arrests. On suspicion of assault, Tonacia Yvonne Tyson, Taneshia Deshawn Jordan, and Marilyn Latish McKey were detained. The Danby House, which specialized in providing care for people living with Alzheimer's, employed the trio of women. The three staff members allegedly encouraged the residents to engage in physical combat. Additionally, the personnel recorded the clashes and encouraged the locals. The instances did not result in any injuries, according to reports. (read more) |

Thirty-year-old Troy Phillip Bohling from Lincoln Park, Michigan, has been identified as the American tourist who pushed recent graduate Eva Liu, 21, down a 165ft ravine to her death at a castle in Germany. Bohling was visiting Germany on a tourist visa when he committed the random act of violence. He also pushed Liu's friend, Kelsey Chang, but her fall was broken by a tree. Chang has left the hospital and is expected to fly back to the United States. Bohling now faces charges of murder, attempted murder and attempted sexual assault. Here's what Bohling's neighbors and former classmates had to say about him, and what happened during their encounter before he pushed the women. (read more) |
