| Announcing the 2023 ODP Early-Stage Investigator Lectures | | It is our great pleasure to announce that we have three awardees for the 2023 ODP Early-Stage Investigator Lecture! We received many strong nominations from impressive investigators, so we want to thank everyone who applied. This spring, each awardee will present their work during virtual lectures — read on to learn more. - Lilah M. Besser, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., will present on the structural and social determinants of brain health.
- Justin B. Echouffo Tcheugui, M.D., Ph.D., M.Phil., will discuss type 2 diabetes and heart failure.
- Rodrigo M. Carrillo-Larco, M.D., Ph.D., will cover heart disease and health in Latino populations.
Each year, ODP recognizes early-career prevention scientists who have made outstanding research contributions to their respective fields and are poised to become future leaders in prevention research. Winners are invited to give a lecture on their research and meet with NIH program directors and scientists. | May 3, 2023, 11:00 a.m. ET Lilah M. Besser, Ph.D., M.S.P.H. University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Lecture Title: Structural and Social Determinants of Brain Health and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias Dr. Besser will discuss structural and social determinants of health (S/SDOH) that encompass a multitude of factors in the environments in which we live, learn, work, play, and worship. Her presentation will also cover conceptual frameworks for the connections between S/SDOH and outcomes of brain health/Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and will describe related published and ongoing research, with a particular emphasis on neighborhood social and built environments. | | | | | Learn more about the connections between structural & social determinants of brain health from @lilahbesser in the first of three @NIHprevents Early-Stage Investigator Lectures, May 3, 11 a.m. ET. Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Lecture Title: Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease: A Focus on Heart Failure
Dr. Echouffo Tcheugui will use the example of heart failure to illustrate the critical importance of cardiovascular disease prevention in the setting of type 2 diabetes. He will describe novel evidence on the links between type 2 diabetes and heart failure. Dr. Echouffo Tcheugui will also elaborate on specific approaches to preventing heart failure in the setting of type 2 diabetes. | | | @HopkinsMedicine's Dr. Justin Echouffo Tcheugui will discuss the importance of cardiovascular disease prevention for individuals with type 2 diabetes in the second of three @NIHprevents Early-Stage Investigator Lectures, May 10, 11 a.m. ET. Carrillo-Larco, M.D., Ph.D. Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University
Lecture Title: Cardiometabolic Health and Cardiovascular Prevention in Latino Population Dr. Carrillo-Larco will describe selected features of cardiometabolic epidemiology for Hispanics, global and international comparisons, as well as recent advances and opportunities for risk-based prevention of noncommunicable diseases. This important ethnic group has unique health experiences including migration and health disparities as well as remarkable epidemiological features such as high diabetes-related mortality. In comparison to other world regions, Latin America exhibits great diversity in the distribution of modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors. Despite these unique traits, tools for risk stratification and disease prevention specific for cardiometabolic noncommunicable diseases are limited. | | | Don't miss @rodrigoc_90's presentation on heart health and risk-based prevention of noncommunicable diseases in Hispanic populations, the final of three @NIHprevents Early-Stage Investigator Lectures, June 7, 11 a.m. ET. A recording of these lectures will be available approximately 2 weeks after the presentation. You can view the full archive of previous Early-Stage Investigator Lectures on the Office of Disease Prevention website. These events are open to the public and there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentations. Please feel free to share this information widely.
