👩‍🏫The Smartest Investment You Can Make This Year…

It's the monthly jobs numbers today and they're not going to be pretty and will be possibly the tip of the iceberg as we head into May.

Good morning. Often, the best investments you can make in a given year may not come from the stock market. When interest rates were at historic lows, those who locked in those low rates not only set themselves up to save hundreds of thousands of dollars, but they got in ahead of a sharp reversal higher in mortgage rates in 2022.

This year, the optimal thing to do may be to find new ways to add value at your job. After being a strong jobs market for employees, that trend is shifting. Unemployment is still low, but big layoffs at tech companies are showing that high-earning jobs could be on track for the chopping block this year.

Now's the time to come up with new, revenue-generating ideas – particularly those where you can point to added value for your employer's bottom line. Besides saving your job, it may even set yourself up for a big raise – one that truly does grow higher than inflation.

If It's a Dirty Job, It's Probably Profitable For Your Portfolio
Utility companies tend to offer steady returns, but at a cost. Growth is limited, thanks to regulatory concerns. However, some utilities can fare better than others, either because they're in growing markets, or because they face less regulatory scrutiny.

One such area is in waste management, aka, garbage hauling. This service is often provided to municipalities by an oligopoly of companies. These companies are able to earn reasonable returns, particularly for patient investors.

IN OTHER NEWS
Investors See the Potential for a More Aggressive Fed

Recent economic data shows that inflation remains high, and the job market remains strong. That's a powerful combination for a hot economy, not one that's starting to cool down. Market participants are starting to increase their bets on interest rates rising higher and staying higher for longer as a result – and there's a rising view that the Fed may hike interest rates by 0.5 percent at its next meeting.
Bank of Japan to Test Digital Currency

The Bank of Japan will launch a pilot to test a "digital yen" in April. The experiment comes two years after the central bank launched a proof of concept in late 2020. The goal is to test the technical feasibility of a fully-digital currency.
Goldman Predicts Market Rally in China

Investment bank Goldman Sachs (GS) expects China's stock market to be a top performer this year. That's based on the theme that the country's reopening from the pandemic will lead to a recovery in consumer spending. Chinese stocks have the potential for a 24 percent return, based on an analysis from Goldman.
Some Housing Markets Show Declines

While home prices increased in the fourth quarter nationwide, 20 of 186 markets tracked by the National Association of Realtors showed a decline. The major drops occurred in areas that have historically been the strongest performers, including San Jose, San Francisco, and Anaheim, all in the state of California.
Meta to Add Paid Verification

Taking a page from Twitter, social media company Facebook is also looking at a paid verification program. The subscription program would cost $11.99 per month for web users, and $14.99 per month for iOS users. The subscription would provide additional features in addition to receiving a blue badge akin to Twitter's checkmark.
