TOP NEWS Tyre Nichols's death renews hope for police reform John Lamparski/Getty Images Video footage of police viciously beating 29-year-old Tyre Nichols after a January 7 traffic stop has sparked nationwide protests and renewed calls for police reform. Nichols died three days later. [CNN / Nouran Salahieh, Holly Yan, and Nick Valencia] Activists and President Joe Biden urged Congress to pass Democrats' George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would record police abuses nationwide and make it easier to prosecute officers. The measure passed the House after Floyd's murder in 2020 but failed in the Senate. Those disagreements remain, making the outlook for any reforms poor. [Associated Press / Adrian Sainz] Suicide blast targets Pakistani police Monday, a suicide bomb exploded inside a mosque in a Pakistan police compound, killing at least 61 people and injuring more than 150 others. [Associated Press / Riaz Khan] Officials from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) claimed responsibility for the blast that targeted security forces as they prayed. [CNN / Sophia Saifi, Saleem Mehsud, and Hira Humayun] Peshawar, located near Pakistan's northwestern border, has seen increased violence since a ceasefire between the TTP and the government ended in November.
