Breaking News: Senate votes to prevent rail strike, defusing threat to the economy

The Senate voted Thursday to head off an economically disastrous freight rail strike — following the House's lead in imposing a labor contract despite opposition from unions angry about the lack of concessions on sick pay.

President Joe Biden, who requested the intervention ahead of a Dec. 9 deadline, is expected to quickly sign the legislation.

The vote came just days before the threatened shutdown was likely to start snarling shipments of goods such as drinking-water chemicals. The Senate's Democratic and Republican leaders both supported the move to head off the strike.
