Breaking News: Biden asks Congress to impose labor contract to avert rail strike

President Joe Biden on Monday called on Congress to impose a tentative contract between railroad unions and freight carriers negotiated in September, "without any modifications or delay," to avert a possible strike. Several unions have rejected the deal, saying it doesn't include enough guaranteed sick time, but Biden said in a statement that a rail shutdown "would devastate our economy."

The move is politically risky for Biden, who has touted his support of organized labor, and is likely to face push back from congressional Democrats. But he said: "In this case — where the economic impact of a shutdown would hurt millions of other working people and families — I believe Congress must use its powers to adopt this deal."
