Good afternoon: Today's PM — edited by Justin Green — is 494 words, a 2-minute read.

😷 1 big thing: Triple twist

COVID is the least worrisome piece of the tripledemic threat right now, Axios' Adriel Bettelheim writes.

  • ✅ Good news: COVID cases are down, the new variants seem no deadlier than Omicron, and there are plentiful treatments and vaccines.

❌ Bad news: The other two parts of the tripledemic are filling hospital wards, bringing back triage tents and canceling elective surgeries.

Between the lines: The creeping threat of another viral outbreak has also been pushed aside by elections, the economy, war and natural disasters.

  • "If you don't have children and are a young, healthy adult, it's going to be hard to convince you to mask up to protect the population at large," said Yale infectious diseases specialist Scott Roberts.

The bottom line: We're just in November, and the threat of new COVID variants still looms as people plan indoor gatherings and firm up holiday travel.

🎄 2. Buyer beware: Hackers target discount shoppers

Hackers are ramping up their phishing campaigns to target discount shoppers this holiday season, Axios Codebook author Sam Sabin reports.

  • Why it matters: It's nearly impossible for retailers to track these hacking and spamming attempts unless a consumer reports them.

How to stay safe: Monitor bank statements, double-check senders of emails and website URLs, and be suspicious of any deals that seem too good to be true.

Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history today with a stunning 2-1 victory over powerhouse Argentina.

  • Why it matters: Argentina's loss ends its 36-match undefeated streak and comes during what is expected to be superstar Lionel Messi's last chance to win a World Cup.

Zoom out: South American teams have won the World Cup nine times since the tournament began in 1930, Axios Latino reports.

  • But no South American team has won it since 2002, when Brazil triumphed over Germany.

Go deeper.

  • P.S. ⚽ In another soccer shocker, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United after a dramatic interview with Piers Morgan.
