1 big thing: ๐ 125 dead at soccer match |

At least 125 people died at an Indonesian soccer match on Saturday, marking one of the deadliest crowd disasters in human history. What happened: Fans of Arema FC flooded the Kanjuruhan Stadium field after losing 3-2 at home to rival Persebaya. - Arema fans threw bottles and other objects at players and officials on the field, per AP. They also toppled and set ablaze at least five police vehicles outside the stadium.
- Riot police responded by firing tear gas, causing panic. As the crowd rushed to the exit, some people were trampled and others suffocated. Officials confirmed 17 children died.
What they're saying: "I remember a mother looking for her son. There was lots of screaming. I tried to help but she disappeared. I do not know whether the boy survived. But I do know lots of children died," an on-site sports journalist told The Athletic (subscription). The fallout: Indonesia's soccer association has suspended play and banned Arema from hosting games for the remainder of the season. - FIFA, which prohibits the use of tear gas, has demanded the Indonesian soccer league, known as PSSI, investigate what happened and report back.
- Indonesian President Joko Widodo has requested an independent inquiry into the tragedy — specifically whether laws were broken and how to compensate victims.
The big picture: This is the latest soccer tragedy to come as a result of an overzealous style of policing that treats large crowds as a threat, notes NYT's Rory Smith. - In January, eight people died in a crush at the Africa Cup of Nations after police left them with nowhere to run, disaster nearly struck at the Champions League final in May when police and fans clashed.
- The on-field chaos was also reminiscent of the bloody brawl between opposing soccer fans in Mexico back in March. Police weren't able to maintain control that day, which, oddly enough, may have saved lives.

Eric Herschmann, a top White House lawyer to President Trump, confirms to Axios he is now lead counsel to Brett Favre, who's at the center of Mississippi's biggest-ever public corruption case. What he's saying: "I only agreed to represent Brett Favre after I did my independent due diligence and was convinced that he did nothing wrong," Herschmann told Axios' Mike Allen. - "Brett enthusiastically tried to help his alma mater, a public university, that needed and wanted his help," Herschmann added.
- "Brett had no idea that welfare funds were being used or that others were involved in illegal conduct."
Context: Favre, 52, endorsed Trump in 2020 with a tweet that said in part: "My Vote is for what makes this country great." - Herschmann, 60, was one of Trump's most trusted aides, and represented him at his first impeachment trial.
- He's been subpoenaed by the federal grand jury investigating the Jan. 6 attack.
