According to officials, a California woman is suspected of intentionally running over a guy after accusing him of attempting to run over a cat. Murder charges were brought against Hannah Star Esser, who is being detained on a $1 million bail. Esser allegedly confronted Luis Anthony Victor because she thought he was attempting to hit a cat with his automobile. Instead, Esser stepped out of her car and recorded a profanity-laced rant at Victor. Esser momentarily took off before performing a U-turn, according to the statement. Then, she sped up and immediately hit Victor, throwing him over the windshield and hood many times. Victor, who landed in the street, was pronounced dead at the scene. (read more) |

Yesterday, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Sanibel Island as a 155 mph Category 4 storm. Residents of Tampa Bay had been bracing for impact, expecting storm surges, torrential rains, and potential flooding. Instead, they watched the ocean virtually disappear. It means that a once-in-a-lifetime tidal event we saw in 2017 as Irma approached was just repeated. What causes this haunting reverse-surge? (read more) |

More attention should be paid to some political contests than others. Republicans and Democrats are evenly split 50/50 in the Senate. Republicans would take power if they won one seat, and Democrats' control of the Senate would be further cemented if they won one. There are probably just five contests in the top ten most competitive in the nation where Senate control is at stake. These are the ones you need to watch. (read more) |

Inflation has run hot for over a year now. Massive fiscal spending during the pandemic, supply chain issues, rising rents, and food prices have contributed to stubbornly high inflation. According to the consumer price index, a measure of consumer prices, year-over-year inflation has been above 5% since June 2021. Everyone wants to see inflation come back to earth, but some experts think it could stick around for a while longer. According to St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard, told CNBC in late August that inflation could "be more persistent than many on Wall Street expect." Meanwhile, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink told Bloomberg in June that he expects inflation to remain elevated for several years due to global supply chain issues. If inflation does remain sticky, here are 3 stocks you will want to own. (read more) |

A California woman was arrested for killing a man by hitting him with her vehicle after a dispute. Hannah Star Esser, 20, was driving in the Cypress community Sunday night when she confronted a fellow motorist, Victor Anthony Luis, 43. Eventually, both drivers exited their vehicles and got into a heated argument that Esser recorded, according to authorities. Esser then returned to her vehicle and hit Luis with it. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Esser is now being held on $1 million bail in Orange County for the crime. "This action showed a complete disregard for human life," District Attorney Todd Spitzer said of Esser's action. But perhaps the most perplexing detail of the entire ordeal is why Esser said she rammed her vehicle into Luis and ultimately killed him. (read more) |

According to Maggie Haberman's forthcoming book "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and The Breaking of America," Donald Trump almost fired his daughter, Ivanka, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, via Twitter. "In meetings with Kelly and [White House Counsel Don] McGahn, Trump gave instructions to essentially fire the pair," the book reveals. Haberman says at one point he nearly posted on Twitter that the two were about to leave the White House. Here's who stopped him from doing that and what they told him he should do instead.
