The House censured Rep. Paul Gosar and booted him from his two committees Wednesday over a social media post in a rare rebuke from his fellow colleagues.
Two Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for the measure, which censured Gosar and removed him from his posts on the Natural Resources and Oversight committees. The House seldomly censures its members, with the House last approving a member reprimand more than a decade ago. The punishment generally involves the lawmaker standing in the well of the House chamber while the member presiding over the floor reads the censure language aloud.
The vote is the latest episode in the clash between House Democratic and Republican leaders on how best to respond to the more extreme members of the GOP. Gosar is the second House lawmaker to be removed from his committees this year, with the House voting in February to take Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) off her committees for her incendiary rhetoric and espousal of conspiracy theories.
