Happy 112th Birthday to Army Veteran Lawrence Brooks

Happy birthday to the nation's oldest WWII Veteran! Lawrence Brooks, a patient at VA New Orleans, marked his 112th birthday on September 12.

Brooks received the hospital's 20,000th COVID-19 vaccine. After the injection, Brooks was overjoyed, exclaiming, "I finally got it!"

His advice to those who ask his secret to longevity: "Serve God and be nice to people."

VA supports providers who
help prevent Veteran suicide

VA is committed to supporting community health care providers who treat Veterans at risk for suicide through the Suicide Risk Management Consultation Program or SRM.

This program offers free consultation, support, education and resources that promote best practices to providers working with Veterans at risk for suicide.

"We want all providers to feel supported and confident in their treatment decisions," says Georgia Gerard, an SRM team expert.

Finding a new voice after cancer

After battling throat cancer and undergoing a life-changing surgery to remove his voice box, Army Veteran Arthur Daniels found a new voice.

Daniels got his voice back when his surgeon placed a small opening between the trachea and the esophagus. VA offers Veterans a range of devices to help them communicate.

"I tell other Veterans that it will be fine," says Daniels. "We just drive on."
