Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... Facebook fights for its image against a barrage of criticism and scathing internal reports This newest Facebook controversy comes on the heels of a week of Wall Street Journal stories that exposed problems with fairness in content moderation, misinformation, and harm to teenagers. The independent Oversight Board, citing the Journal series, called on Facebook to provide greater transparency into its XCheck program, which gives high-profile users extra protection from having their posts taken down.
Now, Facebook is ditching apologies and taking a more combative stance against its critics as it faces a new barrage of negative coverage. As part of the new posture, Facebook started testing placing positive messages about itself in users' News Feeds last month, according to the New York Times.
Facebook spokesperson Joe Osborne took to Twitter on Tuesday to complain of "clear falsehoods" in the Times story. Osborne emphasized that Facebook was inserting its positive messages directly on users' pages rather than via changes to the News Feed algorithm. Not sure how that really makes this mess any better.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a new surgeon general, and he doesn't support vaccine mandates Earlier this week, the governor of the Sunshine State announced his pick for surgeon general and health department secretary. Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who was trained at Harvard Medical School and worked most recently at UCLA, shares many of the same viewpoints as Ron DeSantis when it comes to masks, vaccine mandates, and more. Despite the fact that Florida's death toll has surpassed 9,100 in the last month, Ladapo has said he wants to steer the state away from fear.
"Florida will completely reject fear as a way of making policies in public health. So we're done with fear," he said. "That's been something that's been, unfortunately, a centerpiece of health policy in the United States ever since the beginning of the pandemic and it's over here. Expiration date. It's done. We're going to be very explicit about the differences between the science and our opinions…"
He went as far as to say that the vaccines have been treated "almost like a religion and it's senseless." Already, Lapado has implemented some changes. Yesterday, he signed a rule, effective immediately, that wouldn't force asymptomatic students to stay home just because they came into contact with someone who tested positive. They also wouldn't have to take a test to prove they aren't carrying the virus.
Biden speaks with Macron for first time since diplomatic crisis President Biden on Wednesday spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron for the first time since a diplomatic row erupted over a scrapped submarine order. The U.S. and U.K. will help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines as part of a historic trilateral security partnership. In the process of sealing the deal, Biden stepped on France's toes as the country had its own agreement with Australia pertaining to submarines.
France then took the extraordinary step of recalling its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia after both countries blindsided their French allies. It is extremely rare for an ambassador to be recalled from the capital of such a close ally, and a signal of just how furious the French government is with both Australia and the U.S.
Macron up until this point had mostly withheld public comment on the disagreement. Some French officials had likened it to a "stab in the back." However, Biden seems to have been able to ease at least some tensions, as Macron made the decision to return his ambassadors to Washington.
"The two leaders agreed that the situation would have benefitted from open consultations among allies on matters of strategic interest to France and our European partners," the White House said in a statement.
