Well, Good Morning!
Let's take a look at what the day has in store for us.
So, let's dig in, shall we?
Here's What You Need To Know... Why did the CIA director hold a secret meeting with the Taliban leader? CIA Director William Burns met with the Taliban's de facto leader in Kabul on Monday, a source familiar with the situation said, in what marks the group's highest-level encounter with the Biden administration since the fall of the Afghan capital. News of the meeting between Burns and the Taliban leader, Abdul Ghani Baradar, comes one week before the August 31 deadline for the U.S. military to complete its evacuation of Americans and Afghan allies from Kabul.
To date, the Taliban have allowed the American evacuation effort to proceed largely unimpeded, though there have been reports of beatings and injuries in the airport's chaotic perimeter. U.S. officials have warned that the massive crowds could be a target for a terrorist attack by the group known as ISIS-K, which is known to operate in Afghanistan.
Neither the Taliban nor the CIA would confirm the reported meeting between William Burns and Mullah Baradar. The Washington Post says the discussions are likely to have involved the deadline for the US military to conclude its airlift. On Tuesday, President Biden confirmed that the U.S. would adhere to his original deadline of August 31, earning yet more wrath from Congress.
That's a wrap on Andrew Cuomo... make room for NY's first female governor The now-former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had officially stepped down from his post when the clock struck midnight on Tuesday morning, drawing his decade at the helm to a close. His departure follows the state attorney general's report that found he harassed 11 women. In the resignation letter he filed Monday, Cuomo said, simply: "I hereby tender my resignation for the office of Governor of the State of New York. This resignation will be effective at 12:00 a.m., August 24, 2021. It has been my pleasure to serve with you both."
Of course, true to what is becoming the norm at this point, Cuomo couldn't leave without another controversy or two under his belt. On Monday, news outlets released reports that he abandoned his dog, Captain, at the Albany mansion as he departed for his sister's house. Cuomo has fiercely defended himself and denied these claims on social media. Additionally, he apparently granted clemency to four people, and pardoned one more. Ten convicted felons received the same gift from Cuomo last week, bringing his total number of approved clemency requests to 41.
Before he left, Cuomo painted himself as a victim once more in his recorded address. He said that the recent 164-page report was "a political firecracker on an explosive topic, and it did work," to remove him from his post. He claimed "a political and media stampede," was to blame for his downfall, rather than the repercussions of his own actions.Cuomo's departure carved space for the state's first female governor, the former Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul who has touted: "I get the job done because I don't have time for distractions, particularly coming into this position."
Proud Boys leader sentenced to 5 months in prison on weapons and vandalism charges Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced Monday to more than five months in prison for burning a Black Lives Matter banner stolen from a church in Washington, D.C., and for carrying two high-capacity firearm magazines when he was arrested weeks later, the Department of Justice said. Tarrio said Monday that there was "no excuse" for his actions, adding that he made "a grave mistake" that day.
The charges stemmed from a December 12, 2020, incident when a group of Proud Boys members, including Tarrio, stole a banner reading "#BLACKLIVESMATTER" from the Asbury United Methodist Church, doused it in lighter fluid, and set it ablaze, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia said.
Tarrio was arrested when he returned to D.C. from Florida on January 4, 2021, two days before the assault on the U.S. Capitol. While searching his book bag, police found the two firearm magazines, each of which bore the insignia of the Proud Boys, prosecutors said. He allegedly told detectives that he planned to give the magazines to someone in D.C. The day after his arrest, Tarrio was ordered to stay away from D.C.
The judge sentenced Tarrio to 90 days for the destruction of property charge and 150 for attempted possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device but suspended all but 155 days of the sentence on the condition that Tarrio serves three years probation. He will also be required to pay $1,000 in fines and $347 to the church.
