First Capitol rioter sentenced; Indonesia's pandemic.

The first felony sentencing for a US Capitol rioter will likely set the tone for future sentences; Indonesia has become an epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic.   Tonight's Sentences was written by Gabby Birenbaum. TOP NEWS Florida man sentenced for Capitol riot     Spencer Platt/Getty Images A judge sentenced Paul Allard Hodgkins to eight months in prison for his role in the January 6 US Capitol riot  — lower than prosecutors wanted, but higher than the defense's request for no prison time. [Twitter / Zoe Tillman] The judge's decision of prison time will have strong implications for other rioters' felony charges. [MSNBC / American Voices] Prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Hodgkins to 18 months after he pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding, arguing his participation in the riot contributed to a collective threat to democracy. [AP / Michael Tarm] Meanwhile, Hodgkins's defense lawyer argued that the shame of participating in the riot is punishment enough, advocating for probation instead of a prison term. [Independent / Gustaf Kilander] In a meandering defense memo, Hodgkins's lawyer said he did not deserve to be "canceled" and referenced The Scarlet Letter, the Civil War, and Hodgkins's charity work. [Daily Beast / Pilar Melendez] Wearing a Trump 2020 T-shirt and eye goggles on January 6, Hodgkins made it all the way to the Senate floor. He took selfies with rioters after taking a bus from his hometown of Tampa to DC with a backpack full of rope, latex gloves, and goggles. [Tampa Bay Times] More than 100 defendants involved in the Capitol riot are weighing whether to accept a plea deal or go to trial. Hodgkins's sentence provides a look into whether going to trial may provide their desired outcome. [Washington Post / Spencer H. Hsu] Approximately 500 total people have been arrested in connection with the Capitol riot, and they have responded in a variety of ways. Some, like Hodgkins, pleaded guilty, while others tried to delete footage and erase evidence of their participation. [Newsweek / Anders Anglesley] Indonesia becomes a coronavirus epicenter Indonesia has now surpassed Brazil as the country with the highest daily death count from Covid-19, with over 1,000 dying daily from the virus. [Bloomberg / Yudith Ho] The surge is largely due to the delta variant, which is affecting patients in high-population Java Island and Bali and overwhelming some hospitals, as oxygen supplies run low. Paddock, and Muktita Suhartono] The vaccine rollout has been slow in Indonesia; though health care workers have been prioritized, they are among the hardest-hit groups in the current surge. Cases are likely being undercounted as well: Though Indonesia is reporting nearly 50,000 cases daily, a new survey suggests that up to half the residents in Jakarta have contracted the virus. [The Hill / Jenna Romaine] The Biden administration sent a Moroccan man in Guantánamo Bay prison back to his home country, bringing the total population of the prison down to 39. [AP] Coco Gauff, who was slated to lead the US tennis team at the 2020 Olympics, announced she can no longer compete after testing positive for the coronavirus. [NPR / Merrit Kennedy] The Dow Jones fell 800 points as global markets fall due to fears over the delta variant.
