Election night results for the New York City mayor's race are showing Eric Adams with a commanding lead two hours after polls closed. and 73 percent of precincts reporting, Onetime polling favorite Andrew Yang has already conceded.
Adams, a Black former NYPD captain, went into the race as the frontrunner, having steadily topped recent polls with a consistent message of tamping down crime — an issue top of mind for many voters amid a rash of shootings and hate crimes.
A late-in-the-game alliance between rivals Kathryn Garcia and Yang threatened the Adams campaign which came down hard on the team-up, accusing the candidates of attempting to disenfranchise Black voters. But Adams appeared to have a comfortable margin, though the race is far from over.
Voters will have to wait at least a week to see who prevailed under the city's new ranked-choice voting system. The city Board of Elections will run the tallies next Tuesday to determine which candidate picked up the most second- and third-place votes.
As of 10:53 p.m. Adams had 31.1 percent of the vote to liberal Maya Wiley's 21.3 percent. Garcia was running third with 20.6 percent of votes and Andrew Yang had garnered only 11.6 percent,
