Pandemic hits international VET students hard

New data shows the COVID-19 pandemic affected the outcomes of international students who completed a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification in Australia.

International onshore VET qualification completer outcomes 2020 provides a summary of the outcomes of international students who completed their VET qualification in Australia in 2019.

Of those who were employed after training, 68.3% of international onshore VET qualification completers had job hours reduced.

Industry’s role in VET governance

Industry representation and governance in the VET sector have undergone several transformations in the past and continue to do so in the present.

Social partnerships negotiated between governments, employers, unions, and training providers, where each partner is highly valued and willing to take responsibility for their part, is the key to effective VET governance and, ultimately, improve outcomes for learners.

This research summary brings together findings using primarily international country comparisons on industry's role in VET over the last decade.

Collaboration skills

The updated AISC’s National Skills Overview provides high level analysis of industry skills needs, as well as the factors and trends affecting demand for skills at a national level.

According to the Overview, Collaboration skills continue to be highly sought after in many industries.

The collaboration skills identified most frequently were:

• Teamwork and communication skills
• Social perceptiveness
• Customer service.

Collaboration skills were most often explicitly requested for clerical and administrative or sales workers in internet job advertisements; which suggests that employers consider these skills more important in roles where teamwork and collaboration are central to daily duties.

Focus on is a value-added resource produced by the VOCEDplus team to highlight current issues facing the VET sector. Our previous issue also explored COVID-19, providing insights into research and policy that addressed the impacts of the pandemic on education and training.
