  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday announced loosened mask guidelines for outdoor settings. These rollbacks will be especially pronounced for fully vaccinated people, who can now dine at outdoor restaurants with friends without any precautions and attend crowded events such as concerts and sports games provided they are wearing masks. • Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said that the new guidelines underscore the benefits of vaccinations, which are now being offered to all adults in the country. "The message is clear," Becerra said. "You're vaccinated? Guess what, you get to return to a more normal lifestyle." [CBS News]
  • With each day, more Americans join the ranks of those who can benefit from the updated CDC guidelines. 54 percent of US adults have received at least one Covid-19 shot. Almost 40 percent of adults, and over two-thirds of all seniors, are now fully vaccinated. [CDC]

European Union set to lift travel restrictions on fully vaccinated Americans
  • Fully vaccinated Americans will be allowed to travel to Europe as soon as this summer, according to European Commission President Ursula von Leyden. The European Union closed its borders to all nonessential travel more than a year ago. When it opened back up in July, the US was not on the list of countries from which people could come over. [Reuters]
  • The move is a direct result of the country's strong vaccination efforts. Many Americans have received at least one shot of either the Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines; each is approved by EU health agencies. [New York Times / Matina Stevis-Grindeff]
  • American tourists are a huge part of the European economy; more than 5 million visited Italy alone in 2019. So the global community is coming together to get Americans back on planes. Malta is literally paying people to travel there. The International Air Transport Association is developing an app to streamline vaccine data sharing and make international travel more palatable. • While the CDC has said fully vaccinated Americans can resume travel because of the low risk they pose to others, the agency is still advising against it — especially for areas with rising case counts. [USA Today / Josh Rivera]
  • All returnees to America, regardless of vaccination status, still need to submit a negative Covid-19 test before boarding a flight home. [USA Today / Josh Rivera]
