CBSN Originals' new documentary explores the fusion of faith and politics in America. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects every individual's right to freedom of religion. But since the social and cultural changes of the 1960s, questions over the extent to which churches can influence public life have risen in the courts. Some Christians have come to believe that restrictions on religious practices in the public square - such as prohibiting prayer in public schools or requiring goods and services that may violate their religious values - are an attack on their religious liberties. And in recent years, a rising number of Christians fighting back against the separation of church and state have forged a political ideology that seeks to redefine America as a Christian nation, a movement experts have termed Christian nationalism. In the CBSN Originals half-hour documentary, The Right's Fight to Make America a Christian Nation, we hear from those directly impacted by both sides of this debate and ask what the current political climate means for the future of religious freedom in America. | |
