Fill your soul with these book recs

Dear book clubbers,

As March kicks off, I hope you're enjoying The Power! We'll be starting our discussion of that book next week. This week, let's take a look back at our February pick, Luster

Last week, we met Luster author Raven Leilani live on Zoom to talk through the problems of navigating the world as a Black woman, how to make New York City a character in your novel, and what it means to become an artist, no matter what your medium is. You can relive the whole thing here [link tk], either in video form or in a transcript of highlights.

And, as is our tradition, you'll have to stay here in the newsletter to find out what Raven is reading right now.

Every month, we ask our authors what they're currently reading. Here's Raven's answer:

"How Much of These Hills Is Gold by C Pam Zhang. I love Real Life by Brandon Taylor. I'm reading Funny Weather by Olivia Laing. I love it. It's a collection of criticism about art and artists, and it's just been really wonderful to read. They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib. I love,  really love that. I'm trying to get my hands on anything I can that's about music. That is what is really filling my soul. So those are a few that I found really, really exciting."

COMING UP THIS MONTH

Friday, March 12: Discussion post on The Power published to Vox.com

Thursday, March 25: Virtual live event with author Naomi Alderman at noon Eastern. RSVP here.

THE WEEK IN BOOKS AT VOX

This week, I reviewed Kazuo Ishiguro's new novel Klara and the Sun. It's his first since he won the Nobel in 2017, and if you are an Ishiguro person you will probably like this book a lot but also find it unsurprising.

Also: People got extremely mad about Dr. Seuss! I have an overview of the controversy for you.

That's it for this week. See you next week to talk The Power, and until then, happy reading,

Constance
