1 big thing: CDC gives fully vaccinated thumbs-up

Fully vaccinated people can begin taking reasonable steps toward normal life, the CDC said today.

Why it matters: Less than 10% of the U.S. population meets this metric, but it provides hope after a year of isolation for many people.

Among the CDC recommendations for those who got their final dose at least two weeks ago:

  • Can see their families indoors maskless, provided they're local and no one is at risk for severe illness.
  • Can congregate indoors maskless with other fully vaccinated people.
  • No need to quarantine if exposed to COVID but free of symptoms.

The big picture: Fully vaccinated people are being asked to continue wearing masks and social distancing in public, Axios' Marisa Fernandez reports.

  • The CDC isn't adjusting travel guidance because a majority of Americans remain unvaccinated.

The bottom line: A record 2.9 million vaccine doses were administered Saturday, WashPost reports.

4. 🎧 Sheryl Sandberg on the week that changed everything

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg thought Mark Zuckerberg was "nuts" when he raised the possibility in January 2020 that the company's 50,000 employees might have to work from home, she told Dan Primack on Axios Re:Cap.

  • "I was like, 'What do you mean there'd be a pandemic. What's a pandemic? And would we really work from home?' But he said, 'No, no. It's possible that everyone's going to have to, like, go home.'"

The big picture: Sandberg called the pandemic a "crisis for women," but said Facebook was able to retain people by providing additional COVID leave so their "attrition rates of women are not higher than our attrition rates of men."

Axios is looking back at the week of March 9, 2020 — the week high-profile leaders were forced to make consequential choices that upended our lives and society.
