Our Tamsyn Muir live event is next Thursday

Hey book clubbers.

Lots happened this week. Deep breaths. New president. Time to sit still. Read something, maybe.

You can also catch up on our Harrow the Ninth discussion, tell us what you'd like to see from the book club and this newsletter in the future, and make sure you are RSVP'd to next week's live Zoom event with Tamsyn Muir, which is now less than one week away.

TAKE OUR READER SURVEY!

We want to hear from you! We've been doing this book club experiment for eight whole months now (my god), and we've made a few changes and recalibrations over that time. Take this brief survey, and tell us what you've liked, what you haven't, and what you'd like to see us do next.

COMING UP THIS MONTH

Thursday, January 28, 2021: Our live Zoom event for Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth will take place at noon Eastern. RSVP now to join us for a moderated conversation with author Tamsyn Muir herself, including audience Q&A.

We usher one president out and a new one in with a flurry of literary coverage!

I wrote about the right's use of the word "Orwellian" in the deplatforming of Donald Trump, and why Orwell would have hated it. Alissa Wilkinson read Trump against the classic Shel Silverstein poem "Hungry Mungy," about a boy who ate everything in sight, until he had swallowed the whole universe. Plus, were you as blown away as I was by Amanda Gorman, the 22-year-old poet who spoke at Biden's inauguration? Here's the story of Gorman's inaugural poem, "The Hill We Climb."

For books coverage that has nothing to do with presidents, check out Emily VanDerWerff's dynamite look at the buzzy new novel Detransition, Baby, about trans women, parenthood, and detransitioners.

And here's an exciting new project! We just launched Vox Quick Hits, a series of short podcast episodes that clock in at 10 minutes or less, with contributions from everyone who writes about culture here at the site. There are tons of gems already in the feed, but for your book-specific needs, check out the podcast version of my Ask a Book Critic column, where I recommend books to fit your very specific moods. Listen! Subscribe! Write to me for recommendations!
