An independent FDA advisory committee said Thursday that the benefits of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine outweigh the risks, setting the stage for the agency to authorize emergency use of the shot for people 18 and older.
The panel — comprising academic scientists, doctors and officials from other federal health agencies — voted with 20 members in favor of the vaccine and one member abstaining.
FDA is expected to authorize the vaccine on Friday, making it the second cleared for use in the United States. The vaccine was 94 percent effective in a late-stage clinical trial that enrolled 30,000 people, without serious side effects.
